Moving Isn’t Just About Exercise
You don’t need to smash out a gym session to ‘exercise’. Walking, cleaning, gardening and dancing to your favourite song are all great ways to get moving.
Be The Person Who Takes the Stairs
So many of us have sedentary jobs where we can easily be sitting at our desks for 7 or 8 hours Monday to Friday. Then when the weekend hits, we want to lay down and chill out before the new working week comes round again. Next time you take the London Underground or go to a shopping centre where there’s both escalators and stairs you can climb; be the person who takes the stairs. It’s not about burning more calories or feeding the ego that we’re better than others, but about adopting the mentality that you’re a person who is active and takes opportunities to get moving where you can in everyday life.
We’re Not Built to Sit
When I sit at my desk for a few hours at a time, I feel sluggish, tired and my legs tend to feel like heavy weights. This feels uncomfortable and feeds my craving for fast sugar to bring my energy levels back up.
You’ve Got To Burn Energy to Create Energy
I’ve heard this phrase a number of times and at first, I thought logically that doesn’t make any sense. How can you burn up energy in order to create it? But it’s true! How many times have you had a really great couple of weeks of movement and still felt like you could go for a run? Yet when we’re sedentary, the last thing we feel like doing is a 10 minute workout.
If you don’t use your muscles, they have no reason to stay strong and healthy. Quite literally, if we don’t use it, we lose it.
